Since 1972 Syria has been governed by the National Progressive Front, a mainly Baathist coalition in which three socialist parties and the communist party are represented. Since 1973 this was split between the Soviet-oriented wing led by Khaled Bagdash, which has been represented in the ruling coalition, and another one which was created under Riyad al Turk following persistent dissension in it.
