Grus japonensis breeds in eastern Hokkaido, where it's population is non-migratory. The global amount is estimated at about 2,750 birds, while the resident one in Japan has increased to about 1,470, but this growth is not expected to continue due to habitat limitations and change in winter feeding methods by the Ministry of the Environment to reduce high concentrations of cranes.
