Christopher Columbus and members of his crew landed at the island of Guanahani on October 12, 1492, which he named San Salvador. Newly landed from his flagship Santa Maria, he looks upward as if in reverent gratitude for the safe conclusion of his long voyage. With his left hand he raises the royal banner of Castile, claiming the land for his patrons.
